Experience
- Comparative Legal Analyses: Johnnie’s practice is enriched by his academic research on international corporate governance and comparative company law, some of which has been published in legal guides such as Gary Joseph’s Handing a Family Law Matter. With a strong foundation in private international law, harmonized laws, international business transactions, and international fraud he possesses a comprehensive understanding of both civil and common law systems. This expertise is invaluable when navigating multi-jurisdictional disputes and applying harmonized or uniform laws, particularly those developed by The Hague Conference on Private International Law and The United Nations. In 2024, he co-counselled and gave submissions at a trial involving the obfuscation of disclosure and the use of corporations for fraudulent or improper purposes. His focus on corporate social responsibility and its implications for family law supports his work on asset tracing and complex property disputes, providing clients a distinct legal advantage in high-stakes litigation.
- Advocacy and Community Service: Johnnie is committed to access to justice and has previously served as a pro bono legal companion for self-represented litigants at the Brighton County Court in the United Kingdom. His involvement with the Community Legal Outreach Collaboration Keele (CLOCK) demonstrates his dedication to addressing systemic issues with access to justice and legal representation. While at University of Sussex, Johnnie conducted research under the guidance of Dr. Marica Frederica Moscati, an expert in comparative dispute resolution, deepening his understanding of alternative dispute resolution strategies.
- International Asset Tracing and Financial Disclosure: Johnnie has extensive experience handling cases involving asset tracing and financial disclosure across multiple jurisdictions, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and The Bahamas. In 2022, he played a pivotal role in obtaining a worldwide mareva injunction, along with a freezing and preservation order, for assets valued at $200 million USD. In the recent Carter v Carter, 2024 ONSC 5414, in which both he and John G. Cox received commendation from the court for their organized presentation, for their work in distilling voluminous amounts of documentary evidence, and otherwise for their assistance to the Court during the trial.
